In the UK we call them Gundogs – Setters, Pointers, Spaniels – bred to be biddable partners for their humans and as such they make wonderful family pets.
In southern Europe (mainly Spain, Italy and Greece) hundreds of litters of English Setters in particular, are born to be used as Hunter’s dogs. However, those that don’t make the grade, get too old, sick or can’t be sold are just abandoned without food or water and left to die. The more humane of the owners take them to ‘killing stations’ – happy healthy dogs to be put to sleep.
‘Settusfree’ was formed in the UK to assist rescue centres and individuals in Southern Europe to save and rehome these wonderful dogs – many of them coming to the UK.
